What is an Emerging Artist?
The definition of an “emerging artist” varies by event, but in general, it includes:
- Artists who are new to selling their work and want to explore different ways to showcase it.
- Artists who sell their work through other avenues (such as online or in galleries) but haven’t participated in festivals before.
- Artists looking for events that provide additional support, such as lower fees, mentorship, or designated spaces for new exhibitors.
Since festival organizers determine their own criteria for who qualifies as an emerging artist, it’s always best to check an event’s information page on ZAPP to see if you qualify.
How to Use the Emerging Artist Filter
To use the Emerging Artist filter on ZAPP, follow these steps:
- Access the Events List:
- Go to the Events List on ZAPPlication.org.
- Locate the Emerging Artist Filter:
- On the left-hand side of the page, you’ll find various filter options.
- Scroll down to the Emerging Artists section.
- Apply the Filter:
- Within the Emerging Artists section, select your preferred options:
- Accepts Emerging Artists: This will show events open to emerging artists.
- Has Emerging Artists Program or Grant: This will display events offering specific programs or grants for emerging artists.
- Within the Emerging Artists section, select your preferred options:
- View Filtered Events:
- Click Apply Filters to view the events that match your criteria.
- Explore Event Information:
- Click on the name of any event to view more information, including application deadlines, fees, and specific criteria for emerging artists.
Using this filter, you can quickly identify opportunities for emerging artists and find events that align with your experience and goals!
Things to Consider Before Applying
- Indoor vs. Outdoor Festivals – Where do you feel most comfortable displaying your work? Do you need a tent or special setup?
- Costs – Some emerging artist programs offer lower fees, but costs vary among events. Be sure to check the pricing details.
- Rules & Requirements – Each festival sets specific guidelines for participation, setup, and display.
