The fifth annual Arts Festival Conference took place Oct. 7 – 8, 2013, in Louisville, Kentucky. The professional development event, sponsored by ZAPP\u00ae, was a convening for show administrators, artists other professionals in the art fair industry.<\/p>\n

Welcome and Keynote Presentation: Creative Connections for Community Support of the Arts
\n<\/b>As artists and arts administrators, we know support in the form of community loyalty and participation \u2013 including excitement in access to art \u2013 creates a mutually beneficial relationship which in turn fosters future generations of artists, art enthusiasts, and art buyers. The messages we have used, and integrated into the public dialogue, have not yielded the shared vision that we seek. How do we change that, bring art back into the heart of the communities we engage in, and encourage active consumption of the arts? What arguments work? What turns people off\u2014and what do we think is working that is actually detrimental to our efforts?<\/p>\n

Margy Waller’s dynamic, multimedia presentation illustrates what arguments for the arts do and do not resonate with the general community. By showcasing participatory community events, interviews with local and national leaders, and systematic research-based analysis, Waller identifies inclusive community strategies that develop good will and support for the arts by changing the conversation.<\/p>\n

ZAPP\u00ae Symposium: Imitation vs. Inspiration, Appropriation, Credit and Copyright in the Digital Age
\n<\/b>The annual ZAPP\u00ae Symposium is a well-regarded, thought-provoking discussion that has become a staple of the annual conference. This year\u2019s Symposium revolves around topics of originality, intellectual property, mass production, and new technologies disrupting the status quo and includes conversations on fair use, imitation vs. inspiration, and copyright. This is a high-level discussion around trends and industry changes, the larger arts and culture landscape, and contemporary cultural policy issues that impact art festivals and artists.<\/p>\n
