\nPart of being human is the yearning for culture. We express it in every part of our lives: programming the soundtrack for our days as we go to work or run errands; capturing images of things that touch us and posting them to share; writing poems and stories (even if they wind up in a drawer). Art fairs and festivals are portals to the cultural landscape. In this arena, we are taken out of ordinary time and immersed in creativity for an hour, a day, a week. In her books and talks, Arlene Goldbard has imagined a world in which art and culture are given their true meaning, not dismissed as a frill on the social fabric. What would it be like to offer truly interactive and collaborative experiences? How can arts festivals be even more satisfying for the visitors and artists alike? Arlene will ground her talk in some of today\u2019s most exciting ideas and activities, then take us on a journey to several possible arts festival futures, helping us discover exactly where we want to go.<\/p>\n

\nMillennials \u00a0\u2014 those born between 1980 and the mid-2000s \u2014 make up the largest generation in the country, representing one-third of the total U.S. population in 2013. With a unique perspective and a growing influence on business and technology, their cultural impact is undeniable. So, what does this mean for the art world? Specifically, what should the art festival industry do to reach this cohort? Learn just that and more with tips and strategies for targeting a new group of artists, administrators and patrons.<\/p>\n

\nUnderstanding copyright and fair use issues in the arts is essential for running a successful business. In this session, learn what the legal vernacular actually means and how it applies to you. Also, take away important information about protecting yourself on all accounts so that you don\u2019t violate any laws, and so you know what to do if someone infringes on your rights. You\u2019ll leave having a stronger sense of what copyright and fair use entail and why they are so crucial to your arts business.<\/p>\n

1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Managing the Festival in the Cloud: Technical Trends to Enhance Your Festival\u00a0<\/strong>
\nIn the Digital Era, arts festivals exist not only on the ground, but also \u201cin the cloud.\u201d Effective festival management requires not just being able to create an excellent visitor experience in the physical world, but also to replicate and extend that experience into cyberspace. Thus, it is incumbent upon festival managers to provide the same care, attention, and resources to the virtual experiences festivalgoers have as they do to their \u201cin person\u201d experiences. Doing so requires an understanding and development of tactical approaches to build upon traditional festival foundations while accommodating changing demographics and increasing engagement and return visits.<\/p>\n

In addition to sharing general best practices, this session will provide concrete examples of the digital transformation efforts led by the\u00a0Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts<\/a>\u00a0(CPFA). \u00a0Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the challenges and benefits of running a festival on two planes.<\/p>\n

\nThe booth shot is a constant thorn in the side of many artists and art show administrators. What is the purpose of a booth shot? How do \u2014or how should \u2014 shows and their juries use this image? How can artists improve their show applications by changing their booth shots? Join this artist and a show director\/artist duo as they delve into the mysterious and much misunderstood world of the booth image. Artists and show administrators alike will learn more about what should be included in booth images, how a booth image can positively \u2014 or negatively! \u2014 impact an artist\u2019s application, and how it can help administrators ensure the quality of their shows \u201con the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nA panel of professionals will discuss image submissions in terms of composition, technical presentation, artistic presentation, and\/or image quality. All artists attending the conference \u2014 including emerging artists \u2014 are encouraged to submit their jury images or new bodies of work. This session presents a great opportunity to see how images appear in the projected jury format and to also receive valuable feedback on improving jury slides.<\/p>\n

This provocative dialogue will feature input on the perception of application deadlines, refund policies, cooperative marketing, price increases, arts attendance, and more. \nJust like the old proverb that it takes a whole village to raise a child, it can sometimes take a whole village to put on a successful art festival! Okay, it might not take a whole village, but extra helping hands are always integral to the event. Volunteers not only help ensure things run smoothly but also provide welcoming faces as the friendly and enthusiastic representatives of your show. This session will focus on ways to effectively train and manage volunteers in various facets of the art fair experience and will include an in-depth look at why people volunteer to get a better understanding of this unique and altruistic role.<\/p>\n

\nDecreases in already lacking arts education and school arts program funding cuts are just some of the obstacles preventing youth exposure to the arts. Yet, the opportunity to be exposed to art and the creative process are pivotal in cultivating young people and teaching appreciation for handmade, original works of art. This session will focus on ways, jointly and independently, that art fair administrators and artists alike can help with the continuing struggle of fostering arts appreciation in the community and beyond.<\/p>\n
